The Ninth Hadith from Arba’in Nawawi: The Obligation To Obey The Prophet

The following is the ninth hadith from the arba’in nawawi hadith book. This hadith explains the obligation to obey the prophet. 

Muhammad SAW, namely by following what the prophet ordered and staying away from what the prophet Muhammad prohibited because if we violate and argue against the teachings of the prophet Muhammad, SAW will destroy us. Studying the ninth hadith from the book arba’in nawawi is helpful for us to increase our faith and devotion to Allah SWT.

عَنْ اَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ صَخْرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّهِ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُوْلُ : مَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ فَاجْتَنِيبُوْهُ،وَمَا اَمَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَأْتُوا مِنْهُ مَااسْتَطَعْتُمْ، فَاِنَّمَا اَهْلَكَ الّذِيْنَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ كَثْرَةُ مَسَائِلِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافُهُمْ عَلَى اَنْبِيَائِهِمْ. Latin Inscription : ‘An abi huroirota abirrokhmanibni shokhro rodhiyallahu ‘anhu qola sami’tu rosuulallahi shollallahu ‘alaihi wa sallama yaqulu ma nahaitukum ‘anhu fajtanibuuhu wama amartukum bihi fa’tuu minhu mashtatho’tum, fainnama ahlakalladziina man qoblakum katsrotu masailihim wakhtilaafuhum alaa anbiyaaihim (rowahul bukhory wa muslim) 

It means

From Abu Hurairah Abdurrahman bin Sakhr radhiyallahu anhu he said: I heard the prophet sallallaahu’alaihi wa sallam say: What I forbid you should avoid and what I order you should do as much as you can. Verily the destruction of those before you was because of their many (useless) questions and their opposition to their prophets. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Here are four contents of the Ninth Hadith from the book Arba’in Nawawi: 

1. Every Muslim must avoid and stay away from what was prohibited by Rasulullah SAW. Because what is not permitted by Rasulullah SAW means that it is unlawful, and anyone who violates the prohibition gets sin and punishment. 
2. Every Muslim must carry out what was ordered by Rasulullah SAW because what is ordered by Rasulullah SAW means that the law is obligatory to live and carry out, for those who carry out what is ordered by Rasulullah SAW will get a reward from Allah SWT.
3. We must not debate and doubt what the Prophet Muhammad SAW has determined.
4. The cause of the destruction of society or people in the past was that they debated and opposed God’s messengers. Even among these people, some killed God’s messengers.

Explanation of the ninth hadith in the book Arba’in Nawawi

As Muslims, we must believe in the prophet Muhammad SAW with all our hearts by carrying out his teachings and avoiding all his prohibitions. In this hadith, it is told that in the past, there were people who debated and opposed their prophet and experienced destruction, as happened to Noah’s people. When Noah preached to his people for hundreds of years, only a few of Noah’s people believed in him. Most of them opposed and debated the teachings of the prophet Noah. When the prophet Noah built a ship on the mountain, they laughed at and ridiculed him and even had the son of the prophet Noah who did not believe in the teachings his father conveyed. Instantly a flash flood swept through Noah’s area, and Noah survived with some of his people on the ship, while Noah’s people who denied Noah’s prophet and Noah’s son were destroyed in flood. The story of Noah’s prophet can also be a lesson that not always the excellent father has pious children because faith (Iman) and guidance are pearls that must be sought and affirmed in our hearts.

Likewise, in the story of the people of the prophet Lut, where the people of the prophet Lut opposed the teachings of the prophet Lut and argued with the prophet Lut, they continued to practice homosexuality even though the prophet Lut had forbidden it. Finally, when the command of Allah SWT came, the prophet Lut fled with his people who believed in him, while Allah punished those who denied it until they were destroyed and died at dawn.
