First Hadith Arba'in Nawawi: All actions depend on the intention

The following is the first hadith from the arba'in nawawi hadith book, which explains that all actions depend on one's intentions. Studying this hadith will increase our insight and knowledge about Islam and give us perfect morals. Indeed, everyone will get a reward for what he intended.

عَنْ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ اَبِى حَفْصٍ عُمَرَبْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُوْلُ : اِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَاِنّمَا لِكُلِ امرئٍ مَانَوَى فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ اِلَى اللّهِ وَرَسُوْلِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ اِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ اِلَيْهِ (رواه اماما المحدثين ابو عبد اللّه محمد بن اسماعيل بن ابراهيم بن المغيرة بن بردزبةالبخاري وابو الحسين مسلب بن الحجاج بن مسلم القشيري النيسابوري فى صحيحيهما اللذين هما اصح الكتب المصنفة)

Latin inscription: 'An amiyril mu'miniina abi khafsin 'umarobnil khottobi rodhiyallahu 'anhu qola, sami'tu rosulallahi shollallahi 'alaihi wa sallama yaqulu innamal a'maalu bin niyyati wa innama likullim ri in ma nawa faman kanats hijrotuhu ilallahi wa rosulihi fahijarotuhu ila ma hajaro ilaihi (rowahu imam al muhaddatsaini abu 'abdillah Muhammad bin isma'il bin ibrohim bin al mughiroti bin barizdibah al bukhoriy wa abul khusain muslim bil al hajjaj bin muslim al qusyairi naisyaa buri fi shokhikhihima alladziina huma ashokhkhul polakul mushonnifah.)

Meaning From Amirul mu'minin, Abi Hafs Umar bin AL Khottob rodhiyallahu 'anhu he said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad say. Every action depends on his intention, and everyone will be rewarded based on what he intended. Who emigrated because he wanted to please Allah and his Messenger. So his hijrah is for the pleasure of Allah and His Messenger, and whoever emigrates because he wants a decent life in this world or because of a woman he wants to marry, his hijrah will be worth what he intended.

After you read the hadith above carefully and repeatedly, you will understand the three contents of the hadith for each activity depending on the intention, as follows:

1. The intention is the primary condition for the acceptance of an action, and acts of worship will not produce a reward except based on the purpose.
2. Every believer will be rewarded according to their intentions.
3. According to Islam, all practical and permissible actions, if accompanied by the intention of seeking the pleasure of Allah, will be worth worship.

Asbabun Nuzul Hadith Innamal A'malu bin intention (The reasons for the revelation of the hadith are that all actions depend on the purpose)

There was a person who migrated from Mecca to Medina intending to be able to marry a woman named "Ummu Qois" this person emigrated not to seek the reward of migrating, so that person was known as "Muhajir Umm Qois." Previously, this person had proposed to Umm Qois in Mecca, but because of Umm Qois's holiness, Umm Qois heard the call to emigrate and then moved to Medina with other friends. The man who had proposed to Umm Qois eventually migrated, as did Umm Qois.
