The sixth hadith from Arba'in Nawawi: Commandment to Avoid Syubhat (doubtful matters)

The sixth hadith from the hadith book arbain nawawi explains the Commandment to avoid syubhat (doubtful matters) because it is feared that syubhat could lead to unlawful acts. Studying and practicing this hadith will benefit all of us so that we protect ourselves from doubtful matters.

Latin Inscription: ‘An abi ‘abdillahin nu’manni bin basyiirin rodhiyallahu ‘anhuma qola : sami’tu rosulallahi shollallahu ‘alaihi wasallama yaqulu innal khalaala bayyinun wa innal kharooma bayyinun wa bainahuma umuurun musytabihaatun laa ya’lamu hunna katsiirun minannaasi, famanit taqoosy syubuhaati faqod isytabro a lidiinihi wa ‘irdhihi wa man waqo’a fisy syubuhaati wa qo’a fil kharoomi kar roo’ii yar’aa khaulal khimaa wa in khimallahi makharimuhu ala wa in fil jasadi mudhghotan idza sholakhats sholakhal jasadu kulluhu wa idza fasadats fasadal jasadu kulluhu ala wa hiyal qolbu rowahu bukhoriy wa muslim .

It means :

From Abu Abdillah Nu'man bin Basyir rodhiyallahu 'anhu he said, I heard the Prophet shollallaahu`alaihi wa sallam say, "Indeed, what is lawful is clear and what is unlawful is clear. Some things are doubtful (vague) between the two, which many people do not know. So whoever is afraid of doubt means he has saved his religion and his honor. And whoever falls into doubtful matters will fall into things that are forbidden. Like a shepherd who herds his animals around (fields) prohibited from entering it, he will gradually enter it. Know that every king has prohibitions, and Allah's prohibitions are what He has forbidden. Know that there is a lump of flesh in this person; if he is good, then the whole body is good, and if he is bad, then the whole body is bad. Know that he is the heart.” (History of Bukhari and Muslim)

The following are the four contents or contents of the hadith above

  1. The Syubhat case is a matter of ambiguity. The status of halal and haram is still not clear.
  2. Staying away from things that are doubtful because they can lead to unlawful acts, like a goat herder who herds goats near fields that are not his, then over time, these goats will enter areas that are not his.
  3. Abstain from committing minor sins because this can lead a person to commit major sins.
  4. Guarding the heart against doubtful and unlawful things because if the heart is good, then the whole body is good. If the heart is damaged, it can damage the entire human body.
